Jesus answered and said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” – John 3:3
In this section of the book, we discuss in detail the initial step on the road to eternal salvation: being born-again.
You are born-again by accepting Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior and being baptized for the forgiveness of sins.
This is also commonly called simply “believing in Christ” or “placing your faith” in Christ. They all mean the same thing: placing your complete faith, trust and hope in Jesus Christ alone as Lord and Savior, for forgiveness of sins and salvation.
As mentioned, being born again is the first step on the path to eternal salvation, and it is by far the most important step, so let’s get started with it.
Please Note: The method of an “alter call” that you commonly see performed at big “Christian” conferences and even modern “Christian” churches, where someone comes down and says a “sinner’s prayer” and then is magically saved forever after to eternal life with no other action on their part is NOT BIBLICAL! If you thought you accepted Christ by simply saying a “sinner’s prayer” at your local church, or while listening to the radio in the car, or maybe at a big convention, concert or stadium revival, please re-read this section carefully, and make sure you have done things in a Biblical manner, which includes Baptism by immersion for the forgiveness of sins! Also realize the being born-again is only the first step on the road to eternal salvation! Be not deceived! It is fantastic that the Holy Spirit is working on your heart and you are feeling called to Jesus, but please be diligent in being born-again in the manner prescribed in Scripture!
False Teaching(s) You Will Encounter:
- Baptism isn’t required to be born-again (along with related bizarre teachings about how baptism is to be performed)
- Being “born-again” is the only required step one has to take for eternal life (i.e. obedience, works and perseverance are not required)
- Saying the “sinner’s prayer” “saves” you forever to eternal life
Now there was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews; this man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, “Rabbi, we know that You have come from God as a teacher; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him.” Jesus answered and said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? He cannot enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born, can he?” Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water [baptism, not birth] and the Spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not be amazed that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows where it wishes and you hear the sound of it, but do not know where it comes from and where it is going; so is everyone who is born of the Spirit.” Nicodemus said to Him, “How can these things be?” Jesus answered and said to him, “Are you the teacher of Israel and do not understand these things? Truly, truly, I say to you, we speak of what we know and testify of what we have seen, and you do not accept our testimony. If I told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things? No one has ascended into heaven, but He [Jesus] who descended from heaven: the Son of Man. – John 3:1-13
