5.7 Sabbath Keeping (A Form of “Legalism”)

This false teaching claims that Christians today in the New Testament era are still under obligation to keep the ancient Jewish Sabbath of the Mosaic law, given specifically to the Jews in the Old Testament.

Christ when he said keep my “commandments” is referring to his new testament commands as given in the NT books of the bible, not the mosaic law given to the ancient Israelites under Moses!! I cannot stress this strongly enough. Many groups, cults and “isms” (so-called “Christian” churches) today are trying to put people back under the law. This is heresy! If you are putting yourself back under the mosaic law, it must be under all of it and you must keep it perfectly from birth to death which no-one ever did, except Jesus Christ himself. You are re-nailing the son of god Jesus Christ back again to the cross in doing so! See the legalism false-teaching in the Wolves chapter.

Legalism is an extended variation of the Sabbath Keeping (and related false teachings such as food restrictions, etc.), which also tries to put people back under the entire Mosaic Law of the ancient Hebrews, along with required observance of other Jewish customs, restrictions, holy days, etc. These are false teachings, all of them!

The entire book of Galatians was written to counter this movement, which was starting even in the days of the very early church.

Those who teach it are very smooth and slicker than silk and polished in the extreme. The vipers and snakes they are, for they are preaching “another gospel which is not another,” for there is ONLY ONE GOSPEL, and they should be cursed and condemned just like the apostle Paul wrote: “But even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to what we have preached to you, he is to be accursed!” – Galatians 1:8

Those who practice sabbath keeping and legalism are putting themselves back under the Mosaic law. Putting yourself back under, even one tiny part of it means you must keep the entire Law perfectly, you cannot just pick and choose which pieces you are to keep, as Christ said if you break the least of the commandments (of the law) you are guilting of breaking the ENTIRE law, and by doing this you are rejecting Christ on the cross. There simply is no other way to say it. That path leads to condemnation and death at the great Day of Judgment.

Those cults, “isms” and groups which are teaching it (e.g. 7th Day Adventism, and others) should be marked with a “black box” warning label just like they do with some medicines today: stating that if you follow it that it can lead to your (eternal) death. Why am I so adamant about shouting this warning – because I myself was nearly deceived by this false teaching, by these slick wolves!

Those espousing this teaching claim that the 7th day of Creation was a “Sabbath” and that the early saints and patriarchs in Genesis kept the Sabbath also, despite not one single solitary verse or syllable being found in the Bible about that being commanded by God or occurring with the earliest saints.

The Sabbath was introduced, defined, and given specifically to the Jews, in remembrance of God having brought them out of bondage in Egypt. The teachers of this false doctrine also claim that Christ did not come to “abolish” this law, and it’s therefore still binding. Somehow, they seemingly ignore that other part of the verse where it is stated that Christ “fulfilled” the law for us.

The bibles of those who teach this doctrine also must be lacking the entire book of Galatians (among other scripture) which clearly refutes this false teaching! Another example is given in Hebrews 8:13 where it is written: “When He said, “A new covenant,” He has made the first obsolete. But whatever is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to disappear.”

Furthermore, in true hypocrisy, those that “keep” the Sabbath today, do so using artificially constructed “man-made rules” on how to keep it, etc. They do not even KEEP the Sabbath as it was commanded!

There are other claims made by this group, that the Catholic Church “changed” the Sabbath to Sunday (which actually is the Lord’s Day, not Saturday), and that the early church honored the Saturday Sabbath. Once again, there is not a shred of biblical evidence that supports this.

Friend, you are under the Grace of Christ, not the Mosaic law. This false teaching is the start of legalism, which puts you back under the bondage of the old Mosaic Law, which leads to death. Christ, and His grace, lead to life. It was written that if you want to keep the law, you must keep the entire law. Failure to break even the smallest part of the law was equivalent to breaking the entire law! Somehow, this EXPLICIT scripture teaching seems to also elude them.

Those who adhere to this false teaching also tend to have MANY other false teachings attached to their doctrines, things like believing in other “newly inspired” writings by their own sect’s “anointed” prophets, etc. Such hogwash and complete nonsense.

This teaching tramples the Cross of Christ underneath it and leads one back to bondage and death. Even the ancient book Pilgrim’s Progress warns those against turning “back” to legalism, i.e. the way to death.

Strangely, these groups, called “Sabbatarian’s”, think we are still under the Ten Commandments but NOT the other parts of the Mosaic law. They claim that “one part is sacrificial” and “one part is ceremonial”, etc. This is simply more obfuscation in their pretend justification. Nowhere in Scripture is it specified that there is a distinction between the two, in that an ancient Jew who performed one set of laws, didn’t have to perform both sets of laws. They are all part of “the law” as given in the OT.

Finally, even their own observance of the “Sabbath” today is hypocritical and at odds with Scripture. The penalty for breaking the Sabbath of the ancient Jews was death. To my knowledge, not a single solitary person that these groups/cults have ever put anyone to death for breaking their make-believe Sabbaths.

Their hypocrisy proves their own actions and teachings to be false. In fact, one of the main themes of the Gospel books was that of Jesus confronting the hypocrisy of the ancient Pharisees and Sadducees, who didn’t even practice what they themselves preached. Be not deceived!
