“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son,
that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.” – John 3:16

4.6 Holy, Holy, Holy

“HOLY, HOLY, HOLY is the Lord God, the Almighty, who was and who is and who is to come.” – Revelation 4:8

Do not make the same mistake I did for many, many years of judging God based on what you see here all around us today in this world, for this is not what He created. It is what man created by being disobedient to God.

He is morally pure, perfect. That is what “holy” means. We thereby greatly underestimate (by a margin unable to be described by any words I can find) this unimaginable holiness of the Lord God, while at the very same time we underestimate the severity of our sin in relation to His holiness. In the fullness of time, we will see sin for what it really is and how bad it really is, and we will see God for how holy He is.

God “dwells” in light. He appears in the brightest, purest white light you’ve ever seen, or ever imagined; not an impure light as like the sun. Imagine something a million times brighter, whiter and purer. It’s not like any light we see in this material world. This description of His holiness is as close a representation to it as we can get to His holiness at this time.

We will see Him for Who, What and How He really is at the end of time (this church and gospel age), when God will again restore His creation to righteousness wherein that Law, God’s Law – which is the Law of Love, again rules everywhere and where sin, and all things sinful including Satan (the devil), his angels that sinners, and those who have chosen to remain in their sins, will be banished from it forever, out of heaven, away from the presence of the Lord. Those who claimed eternal life in Jesus Christ will then dwell with Him in heaven, for all eternity. This is the justice of a holy, perfect, and morally pure God. It is also the justice of a loving God. Let me explain.

God is love – in fact, a love so pure that we have a very hard time even approaching a proper level of understanding that love, for “as the heavens are higher than the earth, are His ways are higher than our ways.” Actually, there is not (cannot be!) even the merest, tiniest, most infinitesimal amount anything BUT love in God, not even the smallest, tiniest, most infinitesimal amount of hate (the opposite of love) that you can ever even possibly think of.

Any impurity were it to be found in God would be magnified by omnipotence and perfected in eternity to fill the entire His entire being leading to self-extinction. There is not even one iota of impurity in God – Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God”! His true nature of those qualities it’s so far beyond our level of comprehension, we simply try to find words to describe it and can only do so poorly.

I wasn’t sure to include this chapter in the book, but we seldom stop to think who God really is, at His very core. We hear the words holy and love, but to stop and FULLY ponder it leads to simply a  state of awe. There is no other word for it.

In the year of King Uzziah’s death I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, lofty and exalted, with the train of His robe filling the temple. Seraphim stood above Him, each having six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. And one called out to another and said, “Holy, Holy, Holy, is the Lord of hosts, The whole earth is full of His glory.” And the foundations of the thresholds trembled at the voice of him who called out, while the temple was filling with smoke. Then I said, “Woe is me, for I am ruined! Because I am a man of unclean lips, And I live among a people of unclean lips; For my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts.” – Isaiah 6:1-5

Out from the throne come flashes of lightning and sounds and peals of thunder. And there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God; and before the throne there was something like a sea of glass, like crystal; and in the center and around the throne, four living creatures full of eyes in front and behind. The first creature was like a lion, and the second creature like a calf, and the third creature had a face like that of a man, and the fourth creature was like a flying eagle. And the four living creatures, each one of them having six wings, are full of eyes around and within; and day and night they do not cease to say, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God, the Almighty, who was and who is and who is to come.” And when the living creatures give glory and honor and thanks to Him who sits on the throne, to Him who lives forever and ever, the twenty-four elders will fall down before Him who sits on the throne, and will worship Him who lives forever and ever, and will cast their crowns before the throne, saying, “Worthy are You, our Lord and our God, to receive glory and honor and power; for You created all things, and because of Your will they existed, and were created.” – Revelation 4:5-11
