“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son,
that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.” – John 3:16

5.5 Utilizing Technology

“But as for you, Daniel, conceal these words and seal up the book until the end of time; many will go back and forth, and knowledge will increase.” – Daniel 12:4

We have access today to many excellent resources through the wonders of modern technology. Some prominent Christian pastors proclaim loudly that you should avoid all technology, that it is “of the devil,” etc.…I say that proclamation is nonsense. Technology by itself is just a tool to be used for good or bad, like anything else. Prudent use of technology can be of great benefit to believers and help us quickly learn, search and explore the Word of God. We can also read and search through many wonderful writings by the worthy saints who have gone before us.

Technology allows one to “go to and fro” in God’s Word quickly and allows one to look up verses easily, find study notes, and do research. I can carry ten or more Bible translations with me everywhere I go on my phone – complete with study notes, dictionaries, lexicons, maps, etc.…amazing! Why not use technology to your advantage? You can gain access to many resources that would otherwise be impossible or difficult to reach, for instance, radio stations from other geographical areas or even countries.

I recommend that you get at least one Bible app for your phone and tablet – and use them. They allow you to carry several Bible translations in your pocket or purse anywhere you go. Here are some apps I have used:

  • E-Sword App (my primary tool)
  • YouVersion Bible App
  • Apologetics Press App
  • GBN (Gospel Broadcasting Network) App
  • Audio Bible (to listen to the Bible while driving, traveling, sitting on an airplane, etc.)

There are also many wonderful Internet sites with correct teachings and the true Gospel message. I list some trustworthy websites at the end of this book. However, just because you see or read something on the Internet (or anywhere else) doesn’t make it true, factual, let alone solid biblical advice for a Christian. So, as with any information you come across, extreme discernment and discretion are required when reading anything, for there is also an abundance of false teachings on the Internet. Pray boldly for the Holy Spirit to guide you (and keep this book close!).

One of the best things I’ve done (utilizing modern technology) is to get an audio version of my preferred Bible and put it on my phone. This way, I can listen to the Word of God whenever I’m driving, which sometimes is several hours a day; I often listen to a single chapter repeatedly, as you may hear different things in the chapter each time you listen to it. It’s an amazing way to hear the Word of God and make use of what would otherwise be idle and wasted time.

In closing, I need to mention that technology can also consume, overwhelm and take over your life if you let it; it can be addictive and isolating to one who seeks immersion in it. So, please be aware of this potential risk of abuse which can lead to isolation.

FALSE TEACHING(S) YOU WILL ENCOUNTER:

  • Technology is evil  (no, it is just a tool to be used)
