Similar to miracle healings (largely), demonic possession, and “snake handling,” the gift of speaking in tongues was localized to the early apostolic church period and has ceased today. This capability/gift was given at times and places through the power of the Holy Spirit to early apostles to help the early church grow rapidly and also as a sign of the early apostolic authority derived from Christ.
Furthermore, the languages spoken were not made up of gibberish or “alien” utterings as is often contended. The tongues spoken were simply other human languages in order to help spread the gospel message beyond the initial Jewish Christians. There is no scriptural basis whatsoever that speaking in tongues occurs today. Those who claim to practice this today do not even do so in accord with Scripture (i.e., providing interpretation coincident with the tongue speaking); this makes them hypocrites on top of deceivers.
