You are in Beware the Wolves -> List of False Teachings
I recognize that this can be a very emotional topic. God is completely sovereign, and He (through Christ) is the Prince and author of all life (Acts 3:15). He may, of course, act supernaturally and providentially today in matters of His own time and choosing. But also realize that miracle healings were numerous and widespread while Jesus was here on earth because they served to confirm His authority over all things (nature, health, and even death itself) and to confirm His claim of deity. The miracle healings also served to demonstrate His ability to reverse the fall of mankind (the curse, see Genesis 3).
Miracle healings continued for a period of time in the early church and once again served the following purposes:
- Confirmed the authority of the apostles,
- Demonstrated continuity of both the message and power of Christ (i.e., His death didn’t affect His power), and
- They continued to serve as a physical manifestation of Jesus restoring all things (i.e., reverse the fall/curse of humanity).
Note also that the disciples were very careful and clear to attribute all miracles (and the power to perform them) to Christ, not to themselves or done by their own power or piety. From some of the early saints’ writings, we see that miracles continued in various places at various times for about the next 200 years. But we must recognize that such events today are the exception rather than the rule. Hopefully, one is not deceived by the “miracle healers” performed on TV (or elsewhere). [1]
